Sharp´s new 16Mb LPC Interface Flash Memory Optimized for CPUs of Next-Generation PCs

CAMAS, Wash., July 01, 2003 -- Sharp Corporation’s IC Group announced today that it has developed a 16Mb Low-Pin-Count (LPC) interface Flash Memory, designed to be the optimal choice for BIOS memory of next-generation and mobile PCs. Samples will be available in July, with mass production scheduled for August 2003.

To address the future of broadband and terrestrial digital broadcasting, as well as growing needs for the next generation of PCs and the expansion of PC-BIOS memory capacity to 16Mb, Sharp has introduced this new flash memory component, intended for use with the LPC interface. With the elimination of I/O controllers, LPC-compatible chipsets can now connect directly to flash memory, resulting in reduced size and lower cost.

“In parallel with the development of the communications network infrastructure, there is a growing need for next-generation PCs that offer more highly functional CPUs, simplified system configurations, and an overall reduction in system-wide power consumption,” said Mark Hampson, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas. “Among suitable interface standards, the LPC interface has experienced the highest demand, and several chipset manufacturers have begun to support this standard. Moreover, although the conventional 2Mb to 8Mb memory capacity of the PC-BIOS is considered adequate, there is a trend toward expanding this capacity to 16Mb, in line with the increased functionality of CPUs.”

Features of the LPC interface Flash Memory Component:

  • 16Mb Flash Memory, compatible with the LPC interface
  • World’s smallest package size (32-pin TSOP: 8 x 13.4 mm)
