Industry’s Smallest 2-Megapixel CCD Camera Module from Sharp Incorporates Auto-Focus Functionality
CAMAS, Wash., January 28, 2004 – Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas today announced the development of the industry’s smallest (2.63 cc) 2-megapixel charge-coupled device (CCD) camera module with auto-focus for high-end mobile telephones with cameras.
The industry is moving towards incorporating fully-fledged digital camera functionality into mobile phones in response to increased global demand. This trend has driven the number of pixels in these cameras from VGA (300,000 pixels), well into the megapixel range.
“This key addition to Sharp’s diverse lineup of CCDs and imaging devices supports high-resolution photos while keeping changes to the size and thickness of phones to a minimum,” said Mark Hampson, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas. “This module has the features to make your cell phone your only digital camera.”
The new camera module combines a 2-megapixel CCD to achieve a high level of resolution allowing a phone to capture high quality images in light levels down to 2 lux. Sharp’s camera module development technology also incorporates auto-focus functionality that can be built into mobile phones. The auto-focus advantage is clear in all photographs, from close-ups to portraits and landscapes.
