Selecting LCDs for Viewing Video Content
Stripe and Delta Dot Format
When designing a display, the viewing content is an important factor. Optimum displays for graphics can be different from those used exclusively for video. The first choice — especially for small displays — is to determine the format for the pixels. There are two different configurations – stripe and delta. For video only, you are far better off – especially in small formats – using delta. For graphics only (particularly small text), you are far better off using stripe. As you get to larger formats and higher resolutions, stripe is generally used for both types of content.
Response Time
A second factor is the speed of response. As we move to new flat panel television displays, and we get to higher contrast ratios, the ability to see an image trail in conjunction with fast motion is enhanced. Therefore, these panels need faster response times; not just full-on to full-off but faster transitions for grayscale or pastel colors. It is possible to change the liquid crystal materials to improve response times, but unless done correctly, you give up contrast ratio in doing so. When such enhancements are made Sharp has also paid considerable attention to temperature characteristics of LCDs to ensure a good result. We have been able to make this adjustment between response time and contrast ratio with SHARP's Advanced Super View technology to get a very pleasing performance.
Power Management
In the case of highly mobile displays, if you are trying to conserve power, there is a consideration of video vs. graphics in terms of power. Full motion video updated constantly is the worst case scenario for power consumption. When you are showing a simple line status display, or steady graphics the power consumption is less. To address this, has developed a technology called ULC — Ultra Low Consumption. It recognizes the difference between 3 different modes of display from static text to full graphics to full video. It automatically switches between these modes to conserve power.
